Welcome to The Crispy Corner Upasna.Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Upasna and I graduated as a fashion designer from University of The Arts London, London College of Fashion 2012. My passion for creative pattern cutting and Illustration got me a head start to enter the fashion world. I introduced myself in India by my own label named ‘SUVAN’, in Bangalore Fashion Week Summer Showers 2013 and then in Scotland, Sitara Fashion show.
That is amazing. How did you go about making this beautiful dream a reality?
I believe my hard work, patience and love for silhouettes helped me develop the intricate details for my collections and get me to where I am today. My aim is to have SUVAN recognized all over the world.I want Suvan to be known for their designs, quality and its exclusivity. This desire to make Suvan grow, pushes me each day and each moment in trying to achieve my identity and make a huge impact internationally through various projects, exhibitions and shows.
What is the biggest challenge you faced when you started off?
I come from a working class family. In fact, I am the first person amongst my relatives who started their own venture.Hence for me, the biggest challenge was understand the world of business, be able to understand and gain every possible knowledge on how to make a “brand” happen and focus on areas that need attention in establishing my own empire in this fast paced world.
Did you ever worry about your venture not working out? Did you have an alternative planned if it did not work out?
I am a very positive person by nature, at least I try my best to be. I have seen and gone through various ups and downs of life and hence I understand that complexities are part of each ones existence. But I also believe that failure is one step towards success. I have faith in my designs and the hard work I put into it.This faith helps to keep my fears at bay. Also, as much as I believe in my brand, I am always open to new ideas, offers, projects or concepts, which helps me to create a stronger base for my business and build confidence in my creativity.
How supportive were your friends and family when you told them what you wanted to do?
My friends and family have been the pillar of my career and my life. They believed in me from day one, more than I believed in myself at foundation phase. I am thankful and blessed to be surrounded by my loved ones.
What is the biggest happiness you get from your job?
I enjoy exploring ideas, creativity, people and travelling. I got into fashion out of the love for creativity but soon fashion became my link to connect me with different cultures, society, places, art and people. This makes me grow as a person each day. This profession has developed me as an individual by exposing me to different aspects of life. Through design and creativity, I share my thoughts and experiences without seeking any person and loosen up myself with random ideas to create something unique every-day.
If you look back now on how you started, is there something you would have done better?
I am happy the way things are, I have learnt my lesson through difficult paths which will prevent reoccurrence of my mistakes for future. If I have to re-start, I would do it the same way because the lessons I have learnt on the way to reach here have been invaluable to my knowledge and me.
What advice would you give to those who want to start off their own venture?
Think straight, be focused and believe in yourself. To achieve something you love, you might need to go through a rough road but end of the day it will be worth. Never give up because nothing is impossible
What are your future goals for your venture?
I find human nature intriguing and I have tried to capture its complexities in my designs and illustrations. My clothes have a distinct western outlook representing independent and free, contemporary Indian women but has an Indian shade reflecting its rich and diverse culture. Women are strong, they deserved to be pampered and loved by SUVAN refinement.
Who is your favorite designer?
Elie Saab. It is classy and elegant yet very distinct and unique.
“Just around the corner in every woman’s mind – is a lovely dress, a wonderful suit, or entire costume which will make an enchanting new creature of her.”
Can you give our readers one fashion tip on dressing well?
The way one dresses up speaks a lot about their character, cultural and environmental background. One should be confident of what they are as that reflects in the way you dress. Every individual is unique and one must take time to figure out what his or her style is. In this process, do not hesitate to experiment. The more you try, the more you will discover what works for you. As far as my personal taste is concerned I would say keep it elegant. It always works. Try to play with colour and above all be comfortable with your body and skin. Women deserve to be respected and treated like a princess.
Thank you Upasna. It was just wonderful having you here with us and hearing about your beautiful journey. It is truly inspiring and will definitely give many people not only the courage to dream but to make their dreams come true.
