Everyone is wearing it. Runways are filled with it. Fashion rules are broken but who cares we love it. Who would have thought denim on denim would be such a loved trend. 5 years back I wouldn’t have imagined even trying it out especially after seeing the whole world cringe when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake appeared in all denim at the American Music Awards 2001. But now this normcore is once again back and I couldn’t be more happier. This is the beauty of fashion it ends to just take a full circle and come back.
Singapore summer is piping hot these days which you can pretty much make out from my tan, so I decided to wear a sleeveless denim peplum with my slim fit jeans rather than just going for a denim shirt and pants which is the most popular ensemble nowadays. Before moving on to my outfit, let me share with you 3 key tips on how you can pull this look off.
1. Mix and Mash
The key is to mix the texture and wash of denim. Pair a light wash top with dark jeans. Aim to wear the darker wash denim where you wish to look slim as light wash will always attract more attention.
Wearing the same shade and wash of denim can look a bit overwhelming so if you are new to this trend, try mixing up. For a simple look, try a dark loose shirt with a distressed slim fit jeans.
I have mixed textures and gone a shade darker with my jeans. My top is of a smoother denim, similar to chambray as opposed to my pants that is of a tougher material.
2. Break the Flow
Layer your denims. Pair it with leather jackets or kimonos. If you are wearing a denim jacket, go for a neutral top, plaid or checker shirt inside. No I am not saying wearing all denim is wrong but it is all about how you pick pieces and style it. If you want to play safe and yet carry the trend, give the eyes a break and add something more than just denim to your entire outfit.
3. Dress it Up
Denim on denim can look great when styled minimally but this should not deter you from being creative and accessorizing. Pop colours like red, orange and pink look great with blues. Use them in your bag and lipsticks or even outerwear. Brown, black and white are also great and can be incorporated in shoes ,totes and leather jackets.
