Who relates? If you haven’t checked your baby monitor a hundred times, are you even on date night?

On a serious note, we try and limit these monitor checks and enjoy “our” time as much as possible but when your heart is away from you, it’s not easy succumbing to checking the monitor.

Thankfully Kaushik and I try to carve out time not just for date nights but find pockets through the day to connect, cuddle and chat. As parents, couple dynamics changes fairly when another human is priority but it’s so important to not forget who you were as a couple before being parents.

The other day, during a conversation with Kaushik, I shared my feelings of fatigue, even though my week had been relatively relaxed. He pointed out the numerous tasks that were adding to my mental load, making me realize how these seemingly routine responsibilities were draining my energy. Among them, the most significant burden was the constant decision-making, especially concerning family matters. Thankfully, we decided to restructure our family dynamics, and I was able to delegate many of the mundane responsibilities.

However, it struck me that not all couples engage in such conscious discussions. It was only after becoming a parent that I came across the concept of a “default parent.”

A default parent is typically the one who handles most of the child-rearing and household duties. While it’s often the mom who assumes this role, it doesn’t mean the other parent can’t contribute in other ways to ease the load. I strongly encourage all parents, regardless of their default roles, to have open discussions about the mental load to achieve a balanced workload and prevent one partner from feeling disproportionately fatigued.

Kaushik and I have a clear understanding of this balance. We both work, and we share family, childcare, and household responsibilities equally. We recognize that raising a child is challenging and requires a true partnership.

As I look back on the past, remembering how our grandmothers and mothers juggled the demanding tasks of cooking multiple fresh meals daily, running the entire household, attending to school matters, and much more, all without a hint of complaint and often prioritizing their own needs last, I can’t help but be filled with admiration for their remarkable resilience and unwavering dedication.

Being a stay-at-home mom is just as challenging as being a working woman; both roles come with their unique set of difficulties. Being a mother, in and of itself, is an arduous journey. Today, my respect for all women who skillfully manage multiple responsibilities has grown immensely, especially since becoming a mother myself.

Dearest Nishka,

As I sit down to write this, I can't help but think how quickly time is passing. It feels like just yesterday the nurse came and handed you to me after a long labor. And now you're a playful 18-month-old with a world of wonder in your eyes. On this Daughter's Day, I want to take a moment to share a bit of my thoughts with you.

First and foremost, know that you are loved more than words can ever convey. Your giggles, your curious eyes, and your boundless energy fill our home with immense joy. You are truly the sunshine of our lives.

Watching you grow and explore the world has been a journey of endless learning for both Kaushik and I. With you, we have grown and continue to grow.

As you continue to discover yourself and the world around you, I have two wishes for you. Firstly, I hope you carry that same sense of wonder and curiosity with you always. The world is vast and beautiful, and I hope you embrace it with an open heart and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Fame and wealth may come and go, but the pursuit of knowledge and understanding will keep you grounded and fulfilled.

Secondly, you are embarking on a crazy journey. There will be challenges along the way, but always remember that you are strong and capable. Embrace every experience, and never hesitate to ask questions and seek answers. And in this journey, never forget the power of kindness. Always be kind. Kindness is what truly makes us human, and it will guide you through life's ups and downs.

I’m grateful for all the boundless love and laughter you’ve brought into our lives.

But above all, I want to thank you, my little one, for making me a better person.

Because of you, I have discovered strengths I never knew existed within me. You've taught me to believe in myself more than I ever could on my own. You have shown us the true meaning of unconditional love and unwavering effort. Nishki, we promise to have your back, today and always.
