So the Met Gala is over. We have all seen the best and worst outfits. But the beauty of every fashion show, every celebrity gala and every red carpet event is that it teaches us some do’s and don’ts of styling.
The whole point is to learn how you can pull off an outfit in the best way possible without committing any fashion faux pas. Lets see what was wrong with some of the outfits and how it could have been better.
1. Sarah Jessica Parker

- The Problem : The Headdress
The headgear is way too fancy and elaborate compared to the outfit. The reason why Rihanna’s or Courtney Eaton’s outfit at the Met Gala ( see first two pictures below) worked better is that their entire ensemble was exaggerated. The head piece was as dramatic as the gown thus creating an overall unity in the look.
- How this outfit could have worked better :
In the case of SJP, her outfit is too simple for her headgear. Had she worn something more couture and grand, perhaps that would have been the only way she could have pulled off that outrageous head piece. Alternatively, she could have put away the red and silver Philip Treacy hat and just worn the black dress with some ethnic multicolored bracelet and upped her makeup.

2. Katy Perry:

- The Problem : Mismatched Style
Graffitis are usually hard to pull off on flare gowns. Since such bold designs are already so exaggerated, they look best when contained , i.e in fitted dresses, pant suits, short skirts, ,etc. A gown with a flowy shape and gloves is supposed to look elegant. Instead here, it has ragged cut outs and a punk rock design all jumbled up in a seemingly red carpet gown with a purse that looks like a water bottle. The outfit is all over the place.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
There is just too much going on here. The only way this bold graffiti dress could have worked on Katy was if, it was a short fitted dress paired with some gladiator heels. There would then be a harmony to the look. Madonna’s graffiti gown is not the best but works better compared to Katy as it fits her silhouette better and thus looks sleeker.
Alternatively, if we had to use this dress, then Katy Perry should definitely remove the gloves and the water bottle lookalike clutch. She should keep it simple with just the gown and maybe a basic black cuff bracelet.

3. Miley Cyrus

- The Problem : Cut-outs at the wrong place
Don’t get me wrong, we love cut out dresses, but cut-outs that highlight the not-so flattering parts of your body, perhaps not.Miley Cyrus slightly looks visually lanky with her thin frame and short pressed hair. The cut-outs don’t make it any better by highlighting her bony hips.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
Had the dress, been covered, it would have given Miley a fuller and classier look. We have graphically modified the dress to show you how it could have looked better.
4. Jennifer Connelly

- The Problem : Shoulder pads on the dress
The biggest mistake Jennifer Connelly often makes is to wear shoulder padded outfits or outfits that have too much detailing on the shoulders. Jennifer Connelly’s shoulders are wider than her hips, hence the pads make her shoulders look even more bigger, thus disturbing the proportion of the body. In this case, it almost looks like, she is wearing the dress other way round.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
For a body shape, where the shoulders are broader than the hips, the aim must be to make the hips looks wider by wearing fuller skirts or shoulders narrower. Wearing tube dresses or sleek sleeveless dresses which don’t add weight to your shoulders rather highlight its bone structure works best on such body type.

5. Selena Gomez :

- The Problem : Face over powers the dress
Selena Gomez wears a very classy simple white dress but her head gear and bright red lipstick makes her face look too white ,powdery and exaggerated compared to the elegance of the dress.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
The outfit would have worked best with a simple nude makeup and classy earrings, definitely without the white head ornament.

6. Kerry Washington

- The Problem : The Pastel color
A mistake which Kerry Washington often makes is to wear pastel colors. It’s not that that every person can only wear a certain set of colors. But if you have to wear a color which is not your best , you need to pay more attention to your entire ensemble especially makeup and accessories as that itself could make the outfit either a hit or a miss. Bright colors like red, yellow, fuchsia look best with Kerry’s skin tone. It makes her glow much more compared to pastels that can sometimes make her look pale like in this case.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
To carry off this dress, Kerry’s make up should have been slightly brighter, not loud, but brighter. Perhaps a more shimmery or glossy light pink lipstick would have worked better with this kind of dress rather than the nude lipstick. Alternatively, she could have opted for a brighter colored dress.

7. Vanessa Hudgens

- The Problem : Silhouette of The Dress
We love the dress and the colour but the length and shape is just not right for Vanessa Hudgens body shape. Vanessa’s waist line looks lower than it actually is because of the dress. As a result, top half of her body looks longer than her lower half hence making her look shorter than she actually is.
- How this outfit Could have worked Better :
Vanessa needs to make sure her dress makes her body look more balanced. She could have worn a thin black belt to visually make her waist line look higher up than it is. Alternatively, she could have worn a longer length dress to match the length of her bottom half to the upper half of her body. This way she could have looked taller and the dress would have helped to accentuate her body shape.
We have graphically modified the dress to show you how it could have worked better.
We heart you,♥
